Khristian’s photo of the lightning storm we had here in San Clemente, CA on Sunday made the front page of the local newspaper, the OC Register. Khristian has been taking lightning photos for many years, often staying out in the rain for many hours in the middle of the night. He has captured many amazing shots. While the daytime shots are not quite as spectacular as the night ones, in my opinion, it is still very exciting to see one printed in the newspaper with his name on it. I am quite proud of him. His photo takes up almost the entire page!
Aug. 21 – A Chinese man recovers from surgery that removed part of his facial tumours, which weigh more than 20 kilogrammes in total.
A Chinese man says he is relieved after a part of his facial tumours, which weighed about 23 kilogrammes, was removed. Yet doctors say the surgery has caused him to lose his balance.
I didn’t see this race, as I don’t usually watch the 125cc or 250cc races. Guess I just don’t have time. But Brandon told me about this wreck. You can tell the second rider didn’t see the bike until he came through the dust cloud, then he hit the brakes hard, but it was too late.
I followed a web ad for the VW Toureg 2, the one that raced in Baja recently, and found myself looking in the Toureg gallery. I couldn’t believe what I saw. Two pictures of the Toureg catching huge air. I mean, really, that is big air for a stock SUV. I think that must be a first. And not a disclaimer in sight….
Last week I was shopping at Trader Joes, as you do. I was picking out various cereals. Mini-wheats, Go Lean Crunch, etc. I love cereal. All was normal, until I picked up a box of Raisin Bran. The box was heavy. I mean really heavy. It felt as if it was 3 times heavier than it should be. Like it was packed to the very top. The typical disclaimer ’some settling may have occured during shipping’ definitely was not applying in this case. I figured it was some kind of mistake, but didn’t bother checking the other boxes. I dropped it into my cart, and moved on to the wine aisle.
At the checkout, the clerk was unloading and scanning my items. Again, business as usual. Until he picked up the Raisin Bran box.
“Whoa, that’s really heavy” he said. I agreed.
He held on to it for few moments, mentally registering the unusual density of the box of cereal. “Maybe there is a secret prize inside. Like a bar of gold or something” I joked.
He glanced toward the cereal aisle, and I could see in his eyes the desire to get another box and compare. But he quickly dismissed it, as I had done earlier.
The bagger had the same reaction. And for the 3rd time I wondered what exaclty i was going to find in that box. Hopefully not a dead rat or something. I think one of them made the prognosis that it was probably packed solid with raisins…..
They were right. It wasn’t packed to the top, but a good 3-4 inches of the bottom of the box was a solid block, not of gold, unfortunately, but raisins. Khristian discovered it. And I quickly grabbed my camera to document this freak of nature box of cereal. Pictures are here.
This was the 3rd year in a row that I made plans to ride up to Monterey, CA for the MotoGP races. I assumed that I would be accompanied by Robert, Donell, and my father. The same group as the last 2 years. But Robert and Donell were not up for it. ‘It’s too hot. It’s too far’. Gallery
